Gary McKinnon My Views
A few people have asked me why I am supporting Gary McKinnon’s fight against extradition from the UK to America to face charges for hacking into Pentagon networks.
Before I start I just have to say I would love to be as articulate as Stephen Fry and would love to be able to claim to fully understand all the legal aspects and know every detail of the case but I am not and just don’t, I am just one person growing up in a country which is starting to worry me.
My Granny always used to say about the Police “we pay their wages so they work for the people” and she used to say about the Government “we voted them in so they work for us looking after the interests of British people” this all sounded right and very fair and reasonable to me.
Sorry if I am sort of drifting off the topic but I am trying to explain why I feel the way I do and how extraditing Gary McKinnon seems so wrong to me and hopefully will get there in the end and you will understand how I feel, now going back to what my Granny used to say I think things have changed so much now and not for the good.
The Police now seem to concentrate all their efforts on crimes that effect Government revenue or big business and pushing laws and increasing sentences for these crimes, now I am not saying these crimes do not deserve to be punished but to me is seems very unbalanced and I with my limited understanding believed the first priority should be to protecting public safety.
I will try and explain what I’m saying about protecting public safety and I won’t give any names but as an example from the place I live and criminals going to court.
Person One: on his 3rd offence of burglary he was given community service.
As I said I have a very limited understanding of the law and full details of these crimes which they all are but if I just look at it from my point of view and who I would like to see taken off the streets for at least a while and I would rather see someone taken off the streets who was going to either burgle me, assault me or have an sexual interest in children, I don’t really need so much protection from someone who might try and sell me a DVD.
Would it be the case that someone selling DVD’s of child pornography will get a lesser sentence than someone selling DVD’s of copyright material, I think it seems by this they would and I just don’t understand how that is right.
Who is protected by hounding Gary McKinnon and dragging him over to America to be made an example of, I would imagine the punishment of feeling like sitting on death row for the last eight years and stress of his illness and whole life being controlled and driven by just trying to stay in the country he was born has been punishment enough.
He admitted his crime which in itself is unusual when every day in the press you read about crimes committed by Police and MP’s being denied or even described as errors of judgment, Gary McKinnon made an error of judgment when he decided to sit in his bedroom and hack looking for UFO’s but I don’t think when MP’s claim when questioned about for example claiming money on a mortgage they don’t have they made a error of judgment, I think as granny used to say “they got caught with their hand in the cookie jar”
Who is going to be protected if he is dragged to America and used as an example? Brian
